The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is pleased to present the 2022 Journeys in Art History Exhibition on Screen™ film series. Exhibition on Screen™ is the originator and pioneer of bringing exhibition-based art films to the cinema. Working with top international museums and galleries, Exhibition on Screen™ creates films which offer a cinematic immersion into the world’s best loved art, accompanied by insights from the world’s leading historians and arts critics. The focus of the Journeys in Art series is to introduce the works of history’s greatest painters and to provide opportunities to view blockbuster art exhibitions from galleries worldwide. In his brief career, Raphael Sanzio da Urbino shaped the course of Western culture like few artists before or since. Marking the 500th anniversary of Raphael’s death, the greatest exhibition ever held of his works took place in Rome. Exhibition on Screen and award-winning director Phil Grabsky were granted exclusive access to this once-in-a-lifetime show. With more than 200 masterpieces, including paintings and drawings (over a hundred of which have been brought together for the first time) this major exhibition highlights the artist’s celebrated paintings and drawings as well as his work in architecture, poetry, and design for sculpture, tapestry, and prints. With unprecedented loans from the Louvre, National Gallery of Art, and more, the film provides an unprecedented opportunity to see the breadth of Raphael’s skill, creativity and ingenuity. Grabsky provides a fresh look at this giant of the Renaissance, and shows why he is considered one of the all-time greats. This cinematic experience covers the artist’s life in Rome and a unique look at the ancient Rome that was such a powerful influence, including rare footage of Nero’s Golden House that Raphael himself visited. More than just a painter, Raphael was one of the most extraordinary artists of the Renaissance but is often misunderstood or mythologized. On the basis of this extraordinary exhibition in Rome, this film allows Raphael, for the first time, to be truly revealed. [2020, UK, Runtime: 88 minutes, Not Rated] Venue: Cinema Art Theater.
