SUMMARY:Heidi Lowe Gallery - Plan B
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Heidi Lowe Gallery is hosting Plan B Art Project\, a traveling\
nContemporary Jewelry exhibition from October 8th through November 8th\,\n
2022 at her space in Lewes. There will be an opening reception on\nSaturda
 y\, October 8th\, 5-7 pm. The curator of the exhibition\, Shauna\nBlythe B
urke\, states that “Plan B” is an Art Statement to raise\nmoney and aw
areness for Planned Parenthood and to issues surrounding a\nperson’s rig
ht to make choices about one’s own body.”\n\nThe title of the show\, P
lan B\, refers to a type of emergency birth\ncontrol medication (aka the M
orning After Pill) that can be taken to\nprevent pregnancy. Throughout his
tory\, there have been various forms\nof a ‘plan B’ and many cultures
used medicinal herbs to end\npregnancies\, sometimes with poisonous or dea
dly results. The amphora\nbottle which dates back to ancient Greece was us
ed as artistic\ninspiration for this show because it was used to contain h
erbs and\nmedicines.\n\nFor this project\, Burke invited artists to either
transform a cast\nsilver amphora bottle or use their own interpretation o
f Plan B as a\nstarting point to create a unique wearable or sculptural ob
ject. As\nBurke observes “[a]rt has always been a symbolic tool to bring
\nsocietal injustices to light.” Plan B Art Project is a poignant\nexamp
le of this notion by representing over 40 artists’ voices. The\nart obje
cts in this exhibition are symbols of protest against the\nthreats and abo
lishment of the right to access safe and legal abortion\nand reproductive
healthcare in the United States.\n\n \n\nPlan B Art Projects has already
been exhibited in three different\ncities since June 2022. After being exh
ibited at Heidi Lowe Gallery\nfrom October 8- November 8\, it will be show
n at Pratt University in\nBrooklyn\, NY by Shauna Blythe Burke during NYCJ
 W (New York City\nJewelry Week\, November 14th-20th\, 2022). \n
